DUIFG News & Information

DUIFG Alternative Careers London Day

The Durham University Investment and Finance Group (DUIFG) is delighted to announce an excellent opportunity for our members to meet some of our sponsors outside of the investment banking sphere.

On Tuesday 12th March, we will be taking a select group of our members down to London to meet three of our partner firms. The day will allow our members to meet and network with business representatives from each of the three firms. Please find information regarding the firms below:

Allen & Overy is a premier international legal practice focused on solving the toughest legal issues that their clients face, wherever they are in the world.

In our final office visit, Allen & Overy will host a business game for our members. It is a fast paced case study based on an acquisition of a company and gives a great insight into the realities of the type of work available at Allen & Overy. The group will then be given a tour of the Allen & Overy offices by some of their trainees. The trainees will be more than happy to answer any questions that students may have about pursuing a legal career.

Ernst & Young is a global leader in assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services.

Our visit to the Ernst & Young offices will begin with an Introduction to Ernst & Young Q&A and networking session. Representatives from each service line will then talk about their experiences of the recruitment process, summer internships and graduate jobs and there will be an open Q&A session, networking and refreshments.

DUIFG Fund Team Applications

The DUIFG runs a Fund Team that actively invests in the Markets. We are an internal student-run investment fund that meet fortnightly to discuss trade ideas and trading strategies from across the different sectors of the team. Each sector is broken down into three positions, with a sector leader and two junior analysts. This opportunity to research ideas and implement them is a great way to gain first hand exposure to financial markets, as well as learning from one another in a supportive team environment, perfecting trading and investing techniques.

This year we are expanding, and are looking to recruit 40 dedicated, motivated individuals to be part of our team and help build on the successes of previous years. If this interests you, please apply with an attached cover letter (limited to 300 words). This should outline what you can bring to the Fund Team – your interests in markets and why you feel you should be part of the team. Prior experience is useful but by no means compulsory, we are all here to learn and develop our skills. Outlining your preference for a sector would also be helpful, whilst a trade idea is not necessarily compulsory, but would be a useful way to display your thought processes and decision making.

Application & Graduate Job Workshop

The DUIFG will be running a workshop for member applying to internships and graduate jobs this year. The workshop will be run by DUIFG exec members who have completed internships in The City this summer. It will outline how to tackle the application forms, numerical, verbal and logical reasoning testing, cover letters and CVs and assessment centres.

Please bring along your CV and cover letter examples so we can help you tweak them.
